I was involved on the interestingly name ‘semi complex’ composite part project working with members of Stephen Hallett’s team at the University of Bristol. The name was interesting to me since the part was in fact rather complex with compound curvatures and multiple ply drops. The experimental element of the work was carried out to validate models of the manufacturing process, including identifying where wrinkles would occur and what their severity would be. My role in the project was to support the manufacturing of the part onto a male mould surface and approximately 200 ply lay up. The project overall was a success and has been presented at multiple conferences including the International Conference on Composite Materials.
