Semi Complex Composites

I was involved on the interestingly name ‘semi complex’ composite part project working with members of Stephen Hallett’s team at the University of Bristol. The name was interesting to me since the part was in fact rather complex with compound curvatures and multiple ply drops. The experimental element of the work was carried out to validate models of the manufacturing process, including identifying where wrinkles would occur and what their severity would be. My role in the project was to support the manufacturing of the part onto a male mould surface and approximately 200 ply lay up. The project overall was a success and has been presented at multiple conferences including the International Conference on Composite Materials.

BAE ICASE Student of the Year

My work was recognised with the award of BAE Systems ICASE student of the year award in 2019. The selection process involved first being shorted listed internally at the University of Southampton before I went head to head against other students from other universities across the UK. Each shortlisted student presented their work to a panel of BAE Systems technical experts, and fielded questions from the panel. The process culminated in a visit to the BAE Systems Clyde shipyard and a tour of their new river class vessels. I thought this was particularly fortunate, given my maritime background and my specific interest in large ships. After the tour all the short listed students were invited to a dinner at the Science Centre in Glasgow, followed by a presentation of videos recorded by BAE Systems showcasing the work of each student. Finally as the evening drew to a close, the awards were announced, and I was notified that I was the winner of the 2019 award. This high profile award has enhanced the impact of my work, and led to further publicity including a feature article in the prestigious Materials World magazine (check out the article by clicking here).
